About

SunSec is an information security community with strong roots in the Northeast of Brazil, particularly in Natal and surrounding regions. Our goal is clear: to increase knowledge and strengthen information security capabilities in the Northeast, connecting people, sharing experiences, and driving research in the field.

What We Do?
#

Our work goes beyond online discussions – we promote concrete actions to develop information security in our region:

Event Participation – We deliver talks, workshops, and technical content at technology conferences and meetups, spreading knowledge and best practices.

Our Own Events and Meetings – We organize meetups, CTFs, secDojos, and other initiatives that strengthen participants’ skills and encourage the exchange of ideas.

Security Research – Currently, we are focused on CVE research, directly contributing to the global security community by identifying and reporting vulnerabilities in critical software and applications.

Our Mission
#

We aim to strengthen the Northeast in the field of information security, empowering more people, encouraging research, and developing an ecosystem of innovation and continuous learning. We believe that collaboration and knowledge are the best weapons to make the digital world more secure.

Community Roles
#

Our structure is inspired by the history and culture of the sertão and the Potiguar coast. Each role carries the name of a symbol from our region:

Cangaceiros
#

The cangaço was the movement of armed groups that roamed the Brazilian Northeast backlands from the late 19th to the mid-20th century, with Lampião as its greatest symbol. The name comes from canga, the wooden yoke of oxen, after the weight of the weapons they carried across their bodies. They were known for their leadership and organization.

At SunSec, the Cangaceiros are the community’s current leadership, responsible for leading projects, managing the community, and carrying out our mission.

Potiguaras
#

The Potiguaras are the indigenous Tupi people of the Northeast coast, especially in Rio Grande do Norte. Their name in Tupi means “shrimp eaters” and gave rise to the demonym potiguar, used by those born in RN.

At SunSec, the Potiguaras are the volunteers who support our leadership, responsible for taking on important roles for the community’s functioning and supporting our mission.

Galados
#

“Galado” is one of Natal’s most iconic slang words. It emerged during World War II, when the city became a US base: the soldiers went out in gala attire (“traje de gala”) and locals would say “lá vem o galado” (“here comes the galado”), an expression that ended up becoming this very Potiguar word.

At SunSec, the Galados are the rest of the community’s members, essential for us to grow and who, in the future, will become Potiguaras and Cangaceiros to keep our community alive.
